On October 12, Belgrade will host the great star of classical music, violinist, violist and conductor, Julian Rachlin, who will hold a concert for violin and viola. He will perform with violinist Sarah McElravy, his wife, who is an increasingly sought-after rising star.
The concert programme, organized by the Belgrade Festivals Centre, will include compositions by Mozart, Bartók, Wieniawski, Penderecki and Prokofiev.

Julian Rachlin is one of the most famous contemporary artists whose career spans over three decades. Thanks to his remarkable versatility, he has been a conductor, soloist, chamber musician, professor and artistic director. As a violinist, Rachlin has shared the stage with the most renowned orchestras and conductors. His performances as a conductor delight audiences around the world.
Rachlin has been present on the scene since he was thirteen, and for more than thirty years he has been strengthening his reputation as one of the world's leading violinists. As a soloist, he has achieved great success performing with the Munich Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Zubin Mehta, the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, the Oslo Symphony Orchestra with Klaus Mäkelä, the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra with Yuri Temirkanov, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra with Christoph Eschenbach and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with Manfred Honeck.
A strong proponent of the importance of classical music within today's cultural framework, Rachlin’s projects with contemporary composers have brought together artists from a variety of disciplines, backgrounds and genres. He has worked closely with Krzysztof Penderecki, Giya Kancheli, Vangelis and Lera Auerbach and premiered their works. In 2000, he joined Mstislav Rostropovich at the premiere of the Penderecki Sextet, and Penderecki later wrote and dedicated the Double Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra as well as the Chaconne for Violin and Viola to Rachlin. Rachlin has appeared in films, collaborated with digital artists and worked with celebrities such as John Malkovich, Roger Moore and Gerárd Depardieu.
Rachlin's renowned music festivals reflect his joy and passion for bringing great artists and international audiences together in a celebration of music and art. He frequently collaborates with his longtime colleagues Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Denis Matsuev, Janine Jansen, Vilde Frang and Mischa Maisky. His tireless work and dedication to the Julian Rachlin and Friends festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia, which has lasted for more than a decade, is recognized all over the world. He has been recently appointed Artistic Director of the Autumn Gold Festival at the famous Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Dedicated to educating and supporting young talent, Rachlin founded the Julian Rachlin and Friends Foundation to help nurture the careers of outstanding young musicians. Since 1999, he has been a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
Rachlin has won numerous awards in the field of classical music, including the Accademia Musicale Chigiana Siena Prize laureate. Alongside his many artistic activities, he also devotes himself to charity work and educational programmes. He serves as a Young Global Leader for the World Economic Forum, and he is the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund.
Born in Lithuania, Rachlin moved to Vienna with his family when he was three. There he studied violin under the tutelage of the renowned violinist Boris Kuschnir at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and attended private lessons with Pinchas Zukerman in New York. Rachlin also completed conducting studies with maestro Mariss Jansons and Sofia Rachlina, and his mentor was Daniele Gatti.
Julian Rachlin plays the 1704 ‘ex Liebig’ Stradivari violin and a 1785 Lorenzo Storioni viola. His strings are sponsored by Thomastik-Infeld.
His recordings for the Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical and Warner Classics record labels have been met with great acclaim. Sarah McElravy enjoys a diverse international career. Thanks to her commitment to concerts, recitals and chamber music, she is one of the very few artists possessing equal virtuosity in both violin and viola.
As a soloist, she appears in the 2021/22 season with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Highly regarded in Europe, North America and Asia, recent highlights include appearances as a soloist with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Dortmund Philharmonic, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Chamber Orchestra, the Innsbruck Philharmonic, the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, the Naples Philharmonic and the Sofia Philharmonic. She performed the British premiere of Penderecki's Violin and Viola Concerto with Julian Rachlin and the Royal Northern Sinfonia under the direction of Alexander Joel, and Strauss's poem ‘Don Quixote’ with Boris Andrianov and the Russian National Orchestra under the baton of conductor Dmitry Yurovsky. She also performed with the Moscow Soloists under the baton of conductor Yuri Bashmet, as well as the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi. McElravy made her debut in Japan with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the La Folle Journée festival.
Prominent chamber music performances in 2021 include performances in Xi'an (China) with Martha Argerich, performance with the Beethoven Quartet at the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt for the Autumn Gold Festival, and Bach's Goldberg Variations, which will be performed throughout Europe. She has played at the Vienna Musikverein, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Centre, Suntory Hall, as well as at festivals such as the Prague Spring Festival, the Sion Festival and the Julian Rachlin and Friends festival in Palma de Mallorca. She has also performed at Elmau Castle, the Kronberg Academy Festival, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and the Janine Jansen International Chamber Music Festival. As a chamber musician, McElravy collaborates with artists such as: Julian Rachlin, Janine Jansen, Vilde Frang, Denis Kozhukhin, Itamar Golan, Andreas Ottensamer, Mischa Maisky, Nicolas Altstaedt, Boris Andrianov and Daniel Müller-Schott.
As the founder of the celebrated Linden String Quartet, which was hailed as ‘polished, radiant and incisive’ by The Strad magazine, she traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe. The ensemble is a residential quartet at Yale University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Iowa and the University of Idaho. The Quartet has often held master classes, lectures and educational outreach performances throughout the United States and Canada. The winner of the Gold Medal and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, as well as of many prizes at some of the most important festivals, the Quartet was also awarded a prestigious management contract with New York’s Concert Artists Guild.
In 2014, McElravy founded the Chamber Music Society Mexico. As artistic director, she has promoted leading North American artists and provided educational programmes for talented young Mexican musicians.
She holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where her mentors were Paul Kantor and Stephen Rose. She subsequently completed a two-year graduate string-quartet-in-residence programme at the Yale University’s School of Music under the mentorship of the Tokyo String Quartet.
