Bossa nova = nouvelle vague = new wave

This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux’s unique project. By taking the punk and post-punk classics and putting them into a new bossa nova context, the two artists recreated the cover band genre, discovering new exceptional talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose song ‘Fade Out Lines’ was remixed by The Avener – Tristan Cassara), Nadeah, Mélanie Pain and Liset Alea. Their risky move paid off, as evidenced by more than one million copies of their four albums sold (released between 2004 and 2010) and a world tour where they performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and the Olympia Hall (L'olympia) in Paris. Since 2011, Nouvelle vague had taken a break from recording, focusing on innovative live shows created in collaboration with the legendary Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (‘Ceremony’ and ‘Dawn of Innocence’), as well as different projects, such as Libaux’s ‘Uncovered Queens of the Stone Age’, Collin’s ‘Bristol’ and his record label Kwaidan.

The moment has come to write a new chapter in the story of this band: with the new album ‘I Could Be Happy’ (2016) and a live show, Olivier Libaux, Marc Collin and their coterie of female vocalists continue their journey through time with a renewed enthusiasm. ‘Nouvelle Vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends’ is thus the starting point for the following projects: it is a new album containing punk and post-punk standards reshaped by the inimitable Nouvelle vague magic, combined for the first time with the original songs by Collin and Libaux, which proves the two producers are much more than marvelously talented arrangers. At the same time, this album has provided an opportunity for the original singers of the band to reunite – Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea and Nadéah Miranda, as well as for new guest appearances such as Camille or Clara Luciani.

New versions of Nouvelle vague classics, recorded in collaboration with different musicians over the past few years (‘In A Manner of Speaking’ with a Cuban band from Tampa, ‘Killing Moon’ in the joyful manner of Mexican mariachi music, ‘Ever Fallen in Love’ with Indian instruments), once again show that these songs can be adapted and shaped according to any genre, just like the hits of the Beatles or Burt Bacharach. For the first time, the album includes remixes by Dream Koala, Caravan Palace, and many other surprises. The documentary film directed by Marc Collin tells the history of the band since its inception, with reviews of the albums, introductions of the singers and exclusive footage of the most precious moments from their travels around the world. A world tour follows, which starts with concerts in Europe and Asia, and continues in South America and the USA. The band is going on tour with the original line-up, which, along with Mark and Olivier, consists of Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé and Liset Alea.
